A proactive day of action in Chelmsford resulted in 21 arrests, with the majority linked to drink and drug driving, as our officers continue to target those putting lives at risk on our roads.
Led by Roads Policing Unit officers, the enforcement activity took place on Saturday 9 May as part of Operation Limit, a road safety campaign focused on tackling drink and drug driving. Officers concentrated their efforts across the Chelmsford district, delivering decisive action against dangerous drivers.

Of the 21 arrests made, 18 involved alcohol or drugs, and one driver tested positive for both drink and drugs, underlining the serious risks posed by impaired driving.
During the operation, roadside drug testing indicated that most drivers had used cannabis, with some testing positive for cocaine.

The operation also highlighted how drink and drug driving is often linked to wider criminality. Among those drivers arrested for being over the alcohol and drug driving limits, some were also arrested on suspicion of:
- Driving with no licence or insurance
- Possession of drugs
- One driver was wanted in connection with an assault
This reinforces the importance of proactive road policing – not only to improve road safety, but to identify and disrupt wider criminal behaviour.
In addition, officers delivered further significant enforcement:
- 108 Traffic Offence Reports (TORs) issued
- 183 speeding offences detected using camera enforcement
- 8 vehicles seized for no insurance
We’re reminding the public that drivers can still be over the legal limit the next morning, and unsafe to drive because alcohol and drugs impair reaction times, judgement and awareness – a risk that does not disappear after a few hours’ sleep.
Road safety remains a key priority for Essex Police because the consequences of poor and dangerous driving are devastating and far-reaching. Every impaired driver not only risks their own life, but the lives of passengers, pedestrians and other road users.
By removing dangerous drivers from the roads, officers are preventing serious collisions, reducing harm, and protecting communities.
There is no excuse for driving under the influence.
- Plan your journey home before going out
- Use taxis, public transport, or a designated driver
- Look after friends and don’t let them drive while impaired
We’re urging the public to support us in tackling drink and drug driving.
If you suspect someone is about to drive or is driving while impaired, you can help prevent harm or save a life by reporting it:

Essex Police will continue enforcement activity under Operation Limit, with officers highly visible across the county and targeting those who pose the greatest risk.
Those who choose to drink or drug drive will be stopped and they will be dealt with.
