Men’s Shed

Connection, conversation and creation — that’s what joining a Men’s Shed is all about.

Have you heard of SWF Men’s Shed? We officially opened in April 2024, and last year, we became a charity. We are now a CIO (Charitable Incorporated Organisation) and we have a new set of Trustees. We are dedicated to the proven idea that men are at their best when they’re connected, active, and—occasionally—a little bit useful. We are not a secret society, and there’s no initiation ceremony involving a handshake and a spirit level and definitely not a group of blokes obsessing over dovetail joints.

Maybe you’ve lost your reason to get out of bed, and your “to-do” lists have layers of dust thick enough to plant potatoes in? Perhaps it’s time to put down the TV remote, find your boots, and head over to the South Woodham Ferrers Men’s Shed.

The secret ingredient of SWF Shed isn’t the machinery; it’s the banter. We offer a low-pressure zone where “social inclusion” is encouraged. Most of this happens over a cuppa (usually several!), and our core purpose is supporting each other and our health and well-being to bring back the camaraderie that you had at work.

Maybe you could help us finish a bird box or become a “dissectologist” (a posh word for someone who does jigsaws), or just have a chat to put the world to rights, but if you are an organiser, we would like to introduce other activities, so can you help?

We like to play a part in the community, from crafting fairy houses for local gardens to building hedgehog homes and community planters. Come and help with projects that make South Woodham Ferrers a better place. It beats watching Homes Under The Hammer on the telly any day of the week!

For a welcoming environment, an excuse to get out of the house and have a laugh, maybe to pursue a hobby, somewhere to relax, chat if you want, read a book (we have plenty), or help with the jigsaw puzzlers, then pop in. Come for the workshop, stay for the company, and leave feeling a little more like yourself.

You can find us at 19 Woodham Halt, CM3 5SR, just past Medivets on the industrial estate near the rail station. The kettle is always on; pull up a chair (or make ether one!) you’re always welcome. Weekdays from 10 until 1 (except Wednesdays), come and have a chat about the Shed or the Community Hub activities.

Everyone welcome.
