Eyott Sailing Club enjoyed a fantastic week of racing, friendship and summer weather during its annual Eyott Week regatta, with competitors taking to the water over five days of varied and sometimes challenging conditions. We were delighted to welcome friends from Up River Yacht Club to join in with the races.
The breakfast race was a prelude for the week with a number of sailors enjoying the early tide and good weather. It was great to see camping at the club the night before, enjoying time together in the club grounds.
Final day BBQ and prize giving
The official Eyott week of races began in glorious sunshine, with 16 boats lining up for the opening race. A busy start made for plenty of excitement, but all crews got away safely before tackling a testing course that included two visits to Ferry Buoy. Andy Dale emerged victorious after a closely fought race with Toby Hancox, and competitors rounded off the day with swimming and crabbing along the riverbank.
The fine weather continued into day two, with an easterly breeze providing excellent sailing conditions for 12 boats. Another demanding course challenged the fleet, and Andy Dale secured a second consecutive win. The club’s volunteers kept everything running smoothly, both on and off the water, ensuring a safe and enjoyable day for everyone involved.
Day three presented a very different challenge. Scorching temperatures and light, unpredictable winds meant the fleet often found itself bunched together as it made its way onto the main river. Despite the tricky conditions, the race produced some memorable moments and spectacular photographs. A shortened course was eventually required before safety crews helped guide competitors home. Penny Yarwood mastered the difficult conditions to take the win.
By day four, temperatures had eased and a northerly breeze provided ideal racing conditions. Another close contest saw John Hancox narrowly defeat Alexander Johnson in one of the week’s tightest finishes, demonstrating the competitive but friendly spirit that characterises sailing at Eyott.
Getting hot on the safety boat
The final race brought the regatta to a fitting conclusion. Light winds created challenges for some of the later starters, but competitors once again showed determination and good humour. Anette Alver was first across the finish line, while Michael Ettershank claimed victory on adjusted time.
As always, Eyott Week was about much more than racing. Throughout the week, members, volunteers and families came together to enjoy time on and off the water including a challenging treasure hunt organised by Sylvia Lanz and a delicious BBQ on Sunday evening (meat cooked at home due to severe weather!).
