Morrisons has shared the closing dates for 17 of its Morrisons Daily convenience stores – including one in Essex.
The supermarket chain declared last month that it planned to shut down 52 of its in-store cafes and 17 of its smaller outlets, including the Shenfield store, as part of a significant revamp.
In addition, Morrisons announced it would be shutting a number of its hot food counters, meat counters, fish counters, florists, and pharmacies across its supermarket store estate. The company attributed this move to the government’s increase in employers’ National Insurance along with the rise to minimum wage this month.
All of the stores will be permanently closing next week on Wednesday, April 16. The only exception is the Haxby Morrisons Daily store, which will be closed a month later on May 14, reports the Mirror.
The closure of the Morrisons Daily stores will have an even larger impact on the local community, as alongside the supermarket, the local Post Office sites – situated inside the branch – will also be departing. In total, around 11 post office sites may close due to the supermarket closures, and these will shut between April 9 and April 15.
However, the Shenfield Post Office may move down the road. A spokesman for the Post Office said: “We have been informed by Morrisons that they have made the difficult decision to close the Morrisons Daily store where Shenfield Broadway Post Office is located. The store is due to close on 16 April and Shenfield Broadway Post Office will close on Sunday, April 13 at 5.30pm.”
Morrisons has announced the impending closure of several Morrisons Daily stores, some of which house Post Office branches. The supermarket chain expressed its awareness of the inconvenience this will cause to customers and apologised for the short notice as these branches are set to shut down between 9 April and 14 May.
They stated: “Morrisons has made the difficult decision to close some Morrisons Daily stores, some of which contain Post Offices. We fully recognise the inconvenience this will cause for our customers and apologise for the short notification as these branches close between 9 April and 14 May. We have reviewed Post Office provision in these areas and for most of these affected branches we are advertising the vacancies.”
