Kite surfer brought to safety by marine unit

Police Marine Unit in action

Officers from the Police marine unit who were patrolling the county’s coastline were called into action yesterday (Sunday 25 May) after a kite surfer fell into distress off Mersea Island.

The initial 999 report was made to the Coastguard, which then asked our units to move quickly to the man’s location.

He had been in the water for about 30 minutes and had not been able to get to the safety of shore.

Our units arrived and quickly spotted him and were able to bring him to safety before he was given medical checks.

Our marine unit is primarily responsible for policing the 360 miles of Essex coastlines as well as our waterways, from the Thames to the River Stour in Manningtree, and everything in between.

They are also called when people get into difficulty in the water, and they are best-placed to respond.

Chief Inspector Jennifer Bliss, of our operational policing command, said: “Thankfully this incident was ultimately very safely dealt with by marine officers who were able to locate him very quickly after the call being transferred to us.

“Across Essex, we’re committed to keeping people safe, whether that be on our roads, in our neighbourhoods or on our waters.”

Ch Insp Bliss added:

“As we move into the summer season and more people use our waters, you’ll see officers out there with you, keeping you safe when you need us but also patrolling the coast and dealing with criminal offences.

“I would also urge everyone using the water to please take care, even the most experienced water user can get into difficulty. And please take extra care particularly when children are involved.”
