A big change is being proposed for Essex, Thurrock and Southend to create a new Mayoral Combined County Authority for the region, along with a new, directly elected Mayor of Greater Essex, who would oversee decisions on transport, jobs, housing, education, healthcare and the environment.

The Government is seeking views on this from people who live and work in the Greater Essex area, including here in Chelmsford. The consultation is being run by the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government and it’s open until 13 April 2025.
