From Foundations to Futures: A Busy Spring for SWF Men’s Shed

On the evening of 21 April, the South Woodham Ferrers Men’s Shed joined the buzz of the annual Council-sponsored show.

For our “Shedders,” this is more than just a date in the diary; it’s our chance to step out from behind the workbenches and showcase the craftsmanship and camaraderie that define us.

Beyond the displays, the evening served as a vital hub for local connection. We spent the night networking with fellow community groups, many of whom share our core mission: hammering home the importance of mental health and building a front line against loneliness.

A New Chapter at Marsh Farm:

The biggest news of the night was the announcement of our upcoming move. Thanks to a generous agreement with James Sinclair, we have secured a dedicated space at Marsh Farm to build a permanent home.

The vision is ambitious: a 12x60ft insulated steel structure on a solid concrete base. We’ve submitted the planning applications and are now waiting for the green light to start the heavy lifting. This won’t just be a building; it will be a community effort, with the assembly handled by our own members and local volunteers. If all goes to plan, we expect to be moved in and operational between June and December this year.

Branching Out:

Our outreach continues to evolve, too. During the event, we held a meaningful conversation with the team from Paul King Funeral Directors regarding their grief counselling services. We are exploring how the Shed can provide a supportive “next step” for those moving through the later stages of bereavement—offering a place where people can find purpose, a friendly ear, and a bit of sawdust-covered therapy.

Whether we’re building birdhouses or new premises, the goal remains the same: bettering our community, one project at a time.

Would you like to join us? It’s not just the woodwork, its getting our community in action, and we need ideas and someone to take action. Our AGM is coming up in June, look out for more info.

Don’t be shy—get in touch today.

We are open Weekdays 10-1, except Wednesdays.
