Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus shows us a brilliant renaissance man whose dreams of power and glory seem to place the world at his feet. Faustus makes a bargain for his power, but who with? Is Mephistopheles the world-weary neoclassical gentleman he seems to be, or is he the devil himself? Has Faustus inherited the splendid freedoms of the ancient world, or has he made a terrible miscalculation? We shall read the play carefully in class. No prior knowledge is needed, just a pleasure in reading and imagining.

We’ll have time to read the whole play in class. What copy to buy – there are two versions, known as the A and B texts. We’ll do the A text, in fact any are ok that don’t say “B” text. Tip – if searching online, look for “The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus”.
