This course explores the question through close examination of two extraordinary novels ‘Strangers on a Train’ and ‘The Man from London’ by two extraordinary authors, Patricia Highsmith and Georges Simenon.

In a small and friendly group, we will consider whether these acclaimed crime novels have the psychological depth to be labelled ‘literature’ or whether they are merely compelling stories that get away with murder. We will also explore whether changing attitudes have shifted definitions of high and low culture.

Though we will engage seriously with literary ideas and critical analysis, the emphasis will be on the pleasure of reading and sharing opinions.

By the end of the course, we should have an understanding of the criteria by which literature is judged and be better able to ask of any novel, regardless of its reputation: is it any good?
