Essex & Herts Air Ambulance has been shortlisted for five national awards this month for its life-saving work. Organised by Air Ambulances UK, the awards recognise the achievements, commitment and expertise of air ambulance charities across the country.
From doctor of the year to the best volunteer and critical care paramedic, the shortlisting reflects the hard work of all the Essex & Herts Air Ambulance team. The Awards were open to nominations from across the UK’s twenty-one air ambulance charities. The results will be unveiled at an award ceremony on 3rd December.
The shortlisted awards are:
- Doctor of the year for Dr Chris King – Dr King has led some of the charity’s most impactful developments in anaesthesia, pain relief and airway management over the past two years, reviewing every anaesthetic the charity performs and improving care for future patients.
- Critical Care Paramedic of the year for Adam Pitcairn – as an experienced paramedic and the charity’s Cardiac Arrest Lead, Adam played a key role this year in one of the region’s most important developments in cardiac arrest care: the Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest Desk project. A pioneering UK-first initiative delivered by the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust, the team provides live video support during 999 calls to improve bystander CPR and system efficiency.
- Volunteer of the year for Graham Hobbs – Graham was nominated for his work transforming the charity’s Visitor Centre Experience into a thriving, large-scale programme that connects thousands more people with its life-saving work, with well over 2,000 visitors in the last 18 months.
- Innovation of the year for the Clinico-Pathological Correlation (CPC) programme, a new model which sees the clinical team review every patient death attended by its critical care teams with input from a pathologist to learn from every case.
- Charity Team of the Year for the aviation and operations team who secured the charity’s first Air Operator Certificate earlier this year, giving it operational control of its aviation activities.
Commenting on the shortlisting, CEO Mark Jarman-Howe said:
“What’s exciting here is the range of awards for which we’ve been recognised – they illustrate the breadth and depth of our expertise, from the dedication of our volunteers to the pursuit of innovation from our clinicians and aviation team. Our focus, through all of this, is to make our service the best it can be and to ensure our patients get the best possible care”.
