Essex firefighters have faced one of the busiest summers in recent memory, responding to an unprecedented number of wildfires across the county and want to thank local communities for their support.

As September arrives bringing some much needed cooler and wetter weather, Essex County Fire and Rescue Service is reflecting on the unwavering support of its communities throughout an incredibly busy summer for fire services up and down the UK.

Essex crews responded more than 4,200 incidents in July and August, making this summer one of the busiest summers in recent years. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service also supported neighbouring counties during major incidents like the fire at Dunwich Heath in Suffolk and was also supported by neighbouring fire services in times of high demand.

Area Manager Dave Bond said: “Throughout this hot and very dry summer, we’ve received thousands of messages from residents asking how they can help, thanking our crews, and offering words of support and encouragement…And honestly, it really means a lot.

“We want to say a big thank you to our communities for your unwavering support this summer. Our firefighters don’t do this job for recognition. They’re there to help people through some of the most difficult moments of their lives. But when residents take the time to see how they can help during incidents or to share their thanks afterward, it provides a real boost to morale and reminds our crews why they do what they do which is to help make people safe.”

One recent example came following the fire in Drakes Lane, Little Waltham on 29 July, where seven crews worked tirelessly to bring the fire under control and protect nearby homes.

After the incident, several residents got in touch to thank firefighters for their professionalism, kindness and reassurance during what was an incredibly worrying time. They went on to send cards and gifts from the children to all of the fire stations involved to express their heartfelt thanks.

Courtney who lives on Drakes Lane said: “I know I speak for all of us when I say we are incredibly grateful to all of the firefighters who worked tirelessly day and night to keep us and our homes safe, during a week that we know has been incredibly busy for them.

“They made the children feel so at ease during a worrying time and offered endless reassurance, helping us all feel as calm as possible.”

Another resident, Trish, added: “A massive thank you to the incredible fire crews who worked tirelessly to keep our homes and family safe. We are beyond grateful for your hard work and care.

You are truly amazing people and we can’t thank you enough.”

Dave Bond added: “Having the support of our communities means so much to us and, without that support, we couldn’t do what we do.”
